What Do the Numbers on Golf Irons Mean?

If you are new to golf, a set of irons numbered 4 through 9 plus some letters can be baffling. It is actually a simple, logical system. The number on an iron tells you its loft and length, which together set how far and how high the ball flies.
Lower number, lower and further
A lower-numbered iron (a 4 or 5) has less loft on the face and a longer shaft. That combination sends the ball lower and further, but the longer shaft and lower loft make it harder to hit cleanly. These are your longer approach clubs.
Higher number, higher and shorter
A higher-numbered iron (an 8 or 9) has more loft and a shorter shaft, so the ball flies higher and lands softer, but travels a shorter distance. These are easier to hit and used for shorter, more precise approach shots.
The gaps between clubs
Each iron is designed to carry the ball roughly 10 to 15 yards further than the next one up, giving you a club for almost any distance. As a rough guide for a mid-handicap golfer:
